Tytherington Sixth Form Geography trip to Iceland

A group of over 30 Tytherington Sixth Form students and staff arrived in Iceland last Thursday morning for a 3-day adventure in the land of fire and ice.

Day 1 – The adventure began in true Icelandic style with a trip around the volcanically active area of SW Reykjanes peninsula, then inland to explore the recent volcanic eruptions of Natthagi valley, a drive through the now deserted town of Grindavik and a visit to a Lava show. They ended the day exploring the capital city, Reykjavik and wrapped it all up with a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe. What a great first day!

Day 2 – The early start was well rewarded with some stunning physical geography along the south coast of the island, visiting the stunning Skogafoss waterfall, Reynishverfi cliff line, the fishing village of Vik, before hiking to the base of Solheimajokull glacier and then getting soaked at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Back to the local pizzeria for dinner, then souvenir shopping in Reykjavik and even a glimpse of the Northern Lights! What a day!

Day 3 – The day started off right with a trip to the infamous secret lagoon thermal baths, then onto the brilliant Gullfoss waterfall, followed by the stunning geysirs, and Thingvellir National Park where they walked between the two continents and saw the Icelandic President’s holiday home! After a last drive through the baren and desolate landscape, a final trip to Reykjavik for the last souvenir shop and a mighty quiz to round off the day.

Thank you to the students who were amazing throughout the trip and to the staff who accompanied them on what was a truly unforgettable experience for all!
