A group of students from the Tythy Goes Green Elective Club addressed an audience at the Barnaby Festival about their crusade to make Tytherington School a greener place. The presentation and Q&A session was part of a the Barnaby’s “Macc-Tastic, Less Plastic” talks which aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues in the Macclesfield area.

Esther Bird in year 7 talked about the work that the Electives group had done to reduce single-use plastic use in the school. As a result of the pressure from the group, the school have committed to ending its use of single-use plastic in 2019. Initiatives include: ending the sale of single-use plastic bottled water in the dining area, using environmentally friendly cutlery in school and introducing more drinking fountains around the school. Esther was joined in the presentation by fellow Tythy Goes Green members Anna Wilkie, Elliot Martin and Daisy Nixon. Mrs Stockdale and Mrs Massett have worked with the group throughout and helped the students with their presentations. The students also had the opportunity to quiz David Rutley MP about what more could be done on the issue of single-use plastics in schools.
