Following our online Lecture Day on March 30th in which students, staff and parents were able to listen to lectures by Dr Caroline Jay (Reader in Computer Science at the University of Manchester) and Professor Barbara Evans (Professor of Public Health Engineering at Leeds University), both from our parent body, as well as from Mr Botwe,  we held two online Question & Answer sessions this week and last, in which students were able to put questions to the speakers. These sessions were held during morning registration so that the whole school could be part of this. The subjects covered in the lectures were as follows:

  • Predictions: How might Covid-19 change the world for good? (Mr Botwe)
  • Artificial Intelligence: Do we know what it’s doing, and does it matter? (Dr Caroline Jay)
  • Covid 19:  Public Health and Reducing the Risk” (Professor Evans)

In our Q&A session, our speakers were really put through their paces by the students who asked them some very intelligent and challenging questions. The questions were as follows:

Well done to all the Year 7 and 8 students who asked such excellent questions in front of the whole school audience. As always, more questions were submitted than we had time for, but there will be more lecture days and Q&A sessions later in the year. My thanks go to Professor Evans, Dr Jay and Mr Botwe for giving up their time to provide the lectures and to take part in the Q&A sessions, and also to Mr Bill whose technical expertise enabled the entire student population of Tytherington to be online and take part in this experience.
