Following the success of two Tytherington students securing offers at Cambridge this year, on Friday 27 January, the Schools Liaison Officer for Fitzwilliam College Cambridge, Louis Dexter, visited Tytherington School. He provided some excellent advice to students across the age range on applying to Oxbridge and University more generally.

He kicked off with presentations to year 7 and 9 students on the benefits of a university education. Later in the day, he talked to GCSE and A levels students about the advantages of going to Oxford and Cambridge.

He explained the advantages of living in colleges, from the picture-postcard cloisters of King’s College to the more modern and practical buildings found at Fitzwilliam College. He outlined the benefits of living in smaller communities and the generous subsidies available.

Louis then explained the myriad courses and opportunities that Oxford and Cambridge have to offer from Classics, Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic studies and Land Management to Law and Medicine.  The eyes of our students were certainly opened to the realms of academia that universities offer.

He also stressed the fact that many jobs do not require a specialised degree – only 35% of jobs like Medicine and Veterinary Science require a specific degree. A successful career in law, the civil service, or countless vocations is possible after following one’s passions.

He emphasised the crucial nature of wider reading and super-curricular work when applying to Oxbridge. There was an entertaining discussion about possible interview questions from AI generated art to car design inspired by boxfish.

Overall, it was a hugely informative and successful day and we hope that this encourages and inspires many of our students to unleash their undoubted potential and chase their aspirations in third level education, utilising the fantastic support here at Tytherington School.
