Christmas officially began at Tytherington School as the Music Department put on their annual Christmas Concert on Tuesday 5th December.  There were performances from several of the school’s musical ensembles who played to a packed school hall.

The school Choir beautifully performed a trio of pieces, lead by Miss Thorp and accompanied by pianist extraordinaire Mr Andrew Burr.  This was then followed by the highly energetic Drum Group who performed under the expert directorship of Mr Beecher.

Miss Sukemoke lead the String Group as they performed a mixture of pieces ranging from the upbeat shanty Portsmouth, the moving Be Still My Soul from Sibelius’s Finlandia and a festive rendition of Deck the Halls.

The audience were then treated to Ms Fellows’ reading of an extract from Shirley Valentine by Willie Russell to great amusement of all.

The Steel drum band provided their usual Caribbean flavour to Christmas, finishing by Whamageddon-ing everyone with their own version of Last Christmas.

The Student Parliament band featuring Emily Kan, Daisy Foley, Maisie Wallinger and Dan Brown performed Dan’s own arrangement of Somewhere Only We Know’ by Keane.  The ensemble were a credit to the school in demonstrating the depth of talent we are so lucky to have.

Erin Vincent demonstrated her expertise on the violin by brilliantly performing Por Una Cabeza, accompanied by Andrew Burr while the Jazz Band funked up the evening with a mixture big band, jazz standards and fusion pieces.  Students across the entire ensemble demonstrated their immense soloing talents finishing with drum heroics from Ben Coldwell.

The highlight of the evening came with Concert Band’s performance of Music from the film Home Alone.  This epic is the most ambitious piece the ensemble has ever taken on. The quality of the execution sums up the attitudes of the students involved and the quality of musicianship on display.

Mr Botwe, Headteacher, said:” This was an incredible evening which sums up everything that we stand for as a school. The performances were ambitious and the students had to work as a team to pull off a great performance. What lies behind the excellent show is the hard work, passion and enthusiasm of all who were involved. Well done!”
